Chhattisgarh, the 26th state of the Indian Union, is located in the heart of India. It is the 10th largest state in India, with an area of 135,190 km2. The newly formed Indian state of Chhattisgarh is endowed with a unique and rich cultural heritage and the region is full of lush green virgin forests, scenic hills and plateaus intersected by meandering rivers, ancient caves and temples and the last but not least for its rich tribal population.
The state was formed on 1 November 2000. Raipur was mad its capital city. Chhattisgarh borders the states of Madhya Pradesh in the north-west, Maharastra in the south-west, Andhra Pradesh in the wouth, Odisha in the east, Jharkhand in the north-east and Uttar Pradesh in the north. In ancient times this region was called Dakshin Kosala(South Kosala). It is believed that Chhattisgarh takes its name from the 36 pillars of Chhatishgarhin Devi temple. The Mythological history of the state traced back to the days of Mahabharata and the Ramayana. During the middle ages, Chalukya dynasty extablished its rule in Bastar. Anmdev was the first Chalukya ruler who founded the dynasty in Bastar in 1320. In 1741, the kingdom was seized by Marathas from the Haihaya Dynasty. In the year 1758, Chhattisgarh was conquered by Marathas nd Bimbaji bhosle was appointed as the ruler. In the year 1818, Chhattisgarh came unde the British rule. After nagpur was include under the rule of the British government in 1854,Chhattisgarh was created into a deputy commissionership.
